MYTH: having expensive art materials instantly makes you a better artist.
As a young artist, I am constantly exposed to various wonderful works of other artists, often older than I am. Whenever I come across a painting, a drawing or even just a simple conceptual sketch, I can't help but feel jealous and insecure.
I used to have this notion that by owning expensive "artist quality" materials, I will instantly become like these other artists I see on the internet.
I remember when I came across a fashion illustrator (Katie Rodgers) who used watercolours for her art, and I was so inspired by her. I immediately bought myself a fairly expensive watercolour set. Having very little knowledge with the medium, my first works with watercolours looked extremely novice. I didn't become better at painting by using expensive art materials. How I improved was constantly practicing and assessing my mistakes. I have purchased a cheaper watercolour set to help me experiment and fail, so when I've gained more knowledge about the medium and when my skills have matured, I can move on to using the expensive "artist quality" materials for my artworks.
